If you’re anything like me your taste in music changes… a lot. Besides my dedicated Russ and Mac Miller (may he rest in sweet peace) playlists, not one of my general playlists is home to just one genre of music. That being said, I’ve had a playlist for almost every era of my life, so when I hear a song like ‘Sorry Not Sorry’ by Demi Lovato, I am immediately taken back to summer 2017. But also on my summer 2017 playlist is ‘Still Breathing’ by Green Day, ‘Defying Gravity’ from Wicked, and ’24K Magic’ by Bruno Mars. Like I said, I enjoy a variety of music – keeps life interesting. I also typically never associate a song with the year it came out because every single one of my playlists includes music that was popular at the time it was made and throwbacks.
Anyway, now that you know how I operate my playlists and what kind of music I was listening to in 2017, I want to share with you the top 10 songs I’ve been listening to on my current playlist, which I’ve titled ‘corona times‘ – fitting, I know.
***These are ranked in no particular order.
1. Nicknames – gnash, Walk off the Earth
Ugh. This song takes me right back to when I was 17 and madly in love with this boy. This song has the perfect portrayal of ‘we used to be so in love’ to ‘we can’t stand each other now but can we still be friends because I miss you’ vibes. Which, is exactly how I feel about my old relationships at times.
2. Say Anything (Else) – Cartel
This is kind of an oldie, but definitely a goldie as they say. It’s no secret I had a major punk rock phase. Between spending my summer’s at Warped Tour and not owning any other apparel but band tees for a large chunk of my teenage years this phase hit me hard. This song in particular takes me back to summer 2015 when I was arguably in the deepest part of my punk rock phase. Anyway, my point is this song is amazing and timeless.
3. Naked – Ella Mai
The first time I heard this song I had tears burning in my eyes. This song beautifully portrays how I feel when it comes to self-love and finding love. I’ll leave it at that.
4. VICES – Mothica
I’m pretty sure this song because incredibly famous on TikTok which lead the artist to release the full song early and I’m here for it. Anyone who has ever resorted to unhealthy coping mechanisms in the past, this song is for you.
5. Friend Zone – Thunder Cat
I can’t lie – the only reason I downloaded this song is because Ariana Grande shared it in an Instagram story, but it is a good song. As someone who has been in the friend zone more than she’d like to admit (and has arguably put a man or two in the friend zone) this song speaks to me. Not to mention the incredibly unique sound to the song.
6. Best on Earth – Russ (feat. BIA)
I love Russ, but this song in particular puts me in a good mood. It doesn’t matter where I am or what I’m doing, the second I hear this song all I want to do is find the get to the club and dance.
7. DO YOU LOVE HER – Jessie Reyez
This song is truly one of the most beautiful yet haunting tales of a broken heart. Basically, this is exactly how I’ve felt when I’ve gotten my heart broken in the past. Every time I hear this song, any anger I’m still holding in is definitely felt.
8. needy – Ariana Grande
Ariana’s discography houses a multitude of songs I love and relate to, but this one is hands down the most relatable to where I’m currently at in life. Just go listen to the lyrics and you’ll understand.
9. Stay – Festival Mix – Nicky Romero
Imagine the most beautiful, sunny summer day. You’re driving around with the windows down while the sun is shining in your face and this song is blasting from your speakers… that’s what I was doing when I first heard this song. It was a moment so perfect you could say I fell in love.
10. Josslyn – Olivia O’Brien
The passive aggressiveness of this song is what I live for. It wonderfully captures the feeling of finding out that a guy you are seeing hooks up with someone else. It’s that weird line because you aren’t exclusive so you can’t necessarily be mad, but you can be BIIIIIIG disappointed. You know what I mean? Yes? No? Oh well.
So there you have it. My summer 2020 songs. Let me know if we’re listening to similar music or if you have any song recommendations for me – I’m all ears.
Until next time.
